Build Your Own AI Trading Bot with ChatGPT or Claude, or Use Software?

Published by AutoCoin, led by founder James Warwick

Short answer. Yes, you can build your own super-intelligent trading software with ChatGPT or Claude, and a first working version takes a weekend. The hard part is everything around it: order handling, risk limits, monitoring, uptime and honest testing, which is where ready software earns its place. For the category overview, see our Super-intelligent trading software guide.

What can you build with ChatGPT or Claude in a weekend?

A working first version. An AI chat assistant writes good code: give it a clear rule and a broker's documentation and it produces one fast. Alpaca and Tradier both offer broker APIs, and both are AutoCoin venues too, so a weekend project on either is a sensible way to learn how automated stock trading really works.

A typical weekend build does this:

  • Pulls prices on a schedule from the broker's data API.
  • Calculates one signal, such as a moving average cross or a momentum ranking.
  • Places paper orders through the broker's simulated trading environment.
  • Writes every decision to a log file or a small database.
  • Sends you a message when it places an order.

That is a real achievement and a great way to learn. Keep it in paper trading, with simulated money, and watch it for a good while before you think about anything else.

What breaks when you run a homemade trading script for real?

Almost everything around the first version: order handling, risk limits, monitoring and hosting, API changes and testing. A script that works on a Saturday meets a different world on Monday morning, and the first version is the small part of the job. The rest is covered below.

Orders, partial fills and rejections

Orders do not simply fill. They fill in pieces, get rejected, sit unfilled or fill at a price you did not expect. Your code has to track every order state, avoid sending the same order twice after a timeout, and reconcile what it believes you hold against what the broker says you hold. An assistant can write that logic if you know to ask for it. Most first versions never ask.

Risk limits and position sizing

A signal tells you what to buy. It does not tell you how much, where to stop or when to switch yourself off. You need a maximum position size, a daily loss limit, a cap on open orders and a kill switch that works even when your main code has crashed. Without these, one bug in a loop can send the same order many times.

Monitoring, hosting and uptime

Your laptop sleeps. Your home internet drops. A server needs updates, restarts and someone watching it. You need alerts that reach you when the script stops, when data goes stale or when the broker rejects orders. A trading script that fails silently is worse than no script, because you believe it is working.

API changes and honest testing

Brokers change their APIs, rate limits and data formats, and your code breaks on a day you did not plan for. Testing is its own discipline too. A rule tuned to past prices almost always looks good in hindsight. Honest testing means data the rule never saw, realistic costs and slippage, and a long stretch of paper trading before real money. An assistant will happily tune a rule until the chart looks great. That is a trap, not proof.

Your time at 3am

Markets, crypto especially, do not keep office hours. When an alert fires at 3am you are the engineer, the risk manager and the support desk. Ask yourself whether you want that job.

What does building it yourself really cost?

Mostly your time. Building looks free: the assistant subscription is small, a paper account costs nothing and a small server is cheap. The real cost is hours spent building, testing, fixing, watching and updating, and for many people the total is not close to the price of ready software.

Put an hourly value on your time, multiply it by the hours you honestly expect to spend in the first three months, then add the hours every month after that. Compare the total with the price of ready software.

There is one more cost that is easy to miss. A script you wrote yourself has no record anyone else can check. Your own log is your own word. Our software publishes a record you can verify: each day's results are hashed, signed, chained to the previous day and anchored on the Base blockchain, and anyone can recompute them in a browser at autocoin.ai/live/verify. The verified results page explains how it works.

How do building it yourself and using ready software compare?

Building wins on flexibility and low cash cost. Ready software wins on setup time, upkeep, built-in risk controls and, with AutoCoin, a record others can verify. The table compares six factors side by side, from setup time to flexibility, so you can see where each route fits.

FactorBuild it yourselfUse ready software
Setup timeDays to weeks for a first version, longer for risk controls and monitoringConnect your account, choose a strategy, set your capital and switch it on
Ongoing upkeepYou own every fix: API changes, hosting, restarts and data problemsThe vendor maintains the software, and you review your settings and results
Risk controlsOnly the ones you think of, code and test yourself, including the kill switchCapital you set, an on and off switch you control, and trade only access that can never withdraw funds
Record you can verifyYour own logs, which only you can vouch forDepends on the vendor. AutoCoin publishes daily results that anyone can recompute
CostLow cash cost, high time costA subscription or a one time payment, with little of your time
FlexibilityTotal: any rule, any data, any broker with an APILimited to the strategies and venues the software supports

Flexibility is where building wins, and it is a real advantage. If your idea is unusual, ready software will not do it.

When is building it yourself the right choice?

Building is the right choice when the project itself is the point, or when your idea is unusual enough that no product covers it. It suits people who enjoy the work, can describe their rule precisely, know how to run a service and accept the upkeep. Build it yourself if any of these is true:

  • You enjoy it. The project is the point, and the learning is the return.
  • You have a very specific rule that no product offers, and you can describe it in precise terms.
  • You already write software for a living and know how to run a service.
  • You plan to trade small size while you learn and you accept the upkeep.

There is also a middle path. Composer is a no-code builder where you design the rules yourself, for US stocks and ETFs only, free to build and $32 a month to invest live as published July 2026, running in your own brokerage account.

When does ready software win?

Ready software wins when you want the result more than the project: you do not want to babysit a server, you want stocks, crypto, forex and gold in one place, you want risk settings and an off switch that already exist, and you want a record other people can check.

AutoCoin is software for stocks, crypto, forex and gold. Stocks run in your own brokerage account through Alpaca, Tradier, eToro or Public.com. Crypto runs across 10+ exchanges in your own exchange account. Forex software is free for non-US traders. Gold is live, and more commodities are coming. The Super-intelligent trading software page shows how the four markets fit together.

You choose the strategy, set the capital, switch it on or off whenever you like and keep custody. Access is trade only, so the software can place orders and can never withdraw or move funds. You can also do both: prototype your own idea, then see whether ready software already covers it. Frequently asked questions

Can ChatGPT build trading software?

Yes, it can write a first version quickly. Give ChatGPT or Claude a clear rule and your broker's API documentation and you will get working code that fetches prices and places paper orders. What it cannot do is run the thing for you. Order handling, risk limits, monitoring, hosting and honest testing still need your attention, week after week.

Is it legal to build your own trading software?

Yes, automating trading in your own account is generally allowed, and brokers such as Alpaca and Tradier publish APIs for exactly that. You still follow your broker's terms, your tax rules and the trading rules for your account type. Rules differ by country, so check your own situation. This is general information, not legal advice.

How much does it cost to build one?

The cash cost can be low: a chat assistant subscription, a paper account that is usually free, and a small server for hosting. Market data beyond the basics can add fees. The larger cost is your time for building, testing, fixing and monitoring. Price your hours honestly before you compare the total with ready software.

What programming language should I use?

Python is the most common choice, because broker libraries, data tools and examples are plentiful and chat assistants write it well. JavaScript and TypeScript are good alternatives, especially if you already work in them. Choose the language you can read and debug yourself, since you will be fixing this code long after the assistant wrote it.

Can I run it in an IRA?

Sometimes, but it depends on your broker. Some broker APIs do not support retirement accounts, so check yours first. IRA rules also apply: no margin and no short selling. AutoCoin runs in Roth IRA and Traditional IRA accounts through Public.com. The IRA page has the details.

The math

Is it worth it at your balance?

$149/month is a flat software fee, not a percent of your assets, so what it costs depends on the capital it runs. Here is the arithmetic, stated plainly. One fee covers stocks, crypto and gold together, and the forex software is free.

Account balance$149/month equalsLifetime, $999 once, equals
$10,0001.5% per month10% once, then nothing
$25,0000.6% per month4% once, then nothing
$50,0000.3% per month2% once, then nothing
$100,0000.15% per month1% once, then nothing

Lifetime is a one-time $999 payment for lifetime access. It removes the recurring fee entirely, which ends the fee-drag question: one outlay, once, instead of a subscription forever. AutoCoin is priced as a professional tool for real capital: the flat fee gets proportionally cheaper as your balance grows, while percent-of-assets fees grow with it.

And you can watch the strategies work before connecting anything: every strategy also runs in free Demo mode with nothing connected. Start your free week today and every payment counts toward Lifetime. See the public record.

Every number we publish sits next to the controls that bound it: regime detection that moves strategies to cash in hostile markets, trade-only keys on your own venue, and pause or switch off at any time. Your account, your limits, your off switch.
